Q: Daniel Dalton (ECR, UK) - EU study on the welfare of dogs and cats involved in commercial practices (2015-12-15)

In November 2015, the Commission announced some preliminary findings of its study on dogs and cats involved in commercial practices. Its figure of 46 000 dogs traded across Member State borders every month was considerably higher than the official TRACES figure.

1. Can the Commission confirm when it will publish the full findings of the study?

2. Can the Commission give further details on how it arrived at the figure of 46 000 dogs traded across Member State borders each month?

3. Is it possible to break the 46 000 figure down by Member State?

A: Mr Andriukaitis on behalf of the Commission (2016-03-04)

The study on the welfare of dogs and cats involved in commercial practices will soon be concluded. As soon as it is, the Commission will be in a position to respond to the Honourable Member's query as to its date of publication.

It was BUZhonden which in 2014 reported that estimates of ‘domestic sales plus intra-EU trade amounted to 46 000 dogs per month at a value of EUR 5.5 million’. A breakdown of the figures per Member State is not possible.
