The online market place; an argument for self-regulation - Recognising the problems with the online trade in animals and the implications for consumer

On 28 November the EU Dog & Cat Alliance and the European Commission hosted a conference exploring the implications of online pet sales for animals and consumer protection - with Commissioner Andriukaitis.

The internet has become by far the largest market place for animals in Europe. This is happening in unregulated online markets which can lead to poor practice with negative consequences for the animals, the buyers and public health. This multi-stakeholder event looked at different perspectives to the problem and explored the merits of self-regulatory systems to improve the standards of online pet adverts.
